Why would you ask a question here that you could (more) easily look up on Wikipedia?
Yahoo! Answers has its function, but for some of the questions I’ve been seeing, Wiki is much more efficient.

Ex. "What is the landspeed of an Ostrich?"
"What is Hannukah?"

Or heck, use Y!’s encyclopedia:

Some people are plain lazy. Some are dumb. Some like to test others. Some provide interesting answers to a relatively harmless question. Some ask genuine questions. Some want to rack more points for bragging rights.

cuz people make up fun answers.

Well, on this you get points, which is a big thing for some poeple, and you get other people to look it up for you!! (plus sometimes the funny answers are well, funny)

Because people are lazy. Or they don’t know about Wikipedia.
bfeldman23 | Dec 16, 2005

Well… besides the funny answers that the chick mentioned above, you score points for nothing and headed to nowhere!

Some people can provide more insight to specific questions posed than an informal search of a data base. Also, no data base contains EVERYTHING someone would want to know, these (and other forums similar to it) can provide information unavailable there.

I think Answers is better for opinions or really obscure stuff.

"What is the best Italian restaurant in my town?" would be a good question.

Posting a homework assignment, on the other hand, is just plan lazy.

This service has its appeal–at least to me–but I think for a number of the people posing questions it is kind of another game. Earning points for both answering questions as well as getting answers to your questions is turning into a gamer mentality I guess. Plus with reading that a leader board is posted somewhere here gives those with that mentality more motivation to jack up their point totals.

I suppose it’s inevitable to some degree, but I wish Yahoo would dial down the competitive nature of it. I imagine their philosophy is that it drives content, and that the best will eventually filter down.

For the same reason you would ask a question here instead of doing a Yahoo or Google search.

1. Lazy.
2. Stupid.
3. Asking for a recommendation or opinion.
4. Answer not easily found else ware.
5. To get someone else to do your homework.(See 1 and 2)

Because sometimes wikipedia doesn’t have the answer. and sometimes it’s easier to read a few sentences, compared to the long articles on wikipedia!! :)
